LIFE NextFUMIGREEN achieves breakthroughs toward more sustainable agriculture by 2024

Innovation, sustainability and collaboration mark a year full of achievements for LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project

The LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project is working on the development of natural fumigants based on plant extracts to combat pests such as whitefly and fungal outbreaks of botrytis in greenhouse horticultural crops, reducing reliance on conventional chemical pesticides.

Led by FumiHogar, the project has the collaboration of B&B Asesores, Comercial Química Massó, BrioAgro Tech and Fundación Finnova. It is 60% funded by the European Union’s LIFE program, with a total budget of 2.7 million euros. In 2024, key activities such as workshops were held in Almería, where farmers and technicians discussed the use of innovative biopesticides. In addition, the project’s progress was presented at ExpoAgritech 2024 in Malaga, a benchmark event in agricultural technology.

During the European Green Week 2024, a hybrid webinar was held at Tecnova’s headquarters in Almeria, focused on toxic-free agriculture. The event presented the technical advances of LIFE NextFUMIGREEN, promoted sustainable solutions to conventional pesticides and fostered synergies with industry players, reinforcing its commitment to the objectives of the European Green Pact.

Throughout 2024, LIFE NextFUMIGREEN has advanced its mission to improve agricultural sustainability and biodiversity. By 2025, the project plans to validate the efficacy of fumigants in new crops and countries, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability.

Following the withdrawal of the European Commission’s proposal to reduce the use of pesticides, LIFE NextFUMIGREEN is positioned as an innovative and sustainable alternative. As noted by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, “agriculture must move towards a more sustainable model to ensure profitability and position farmers as leaders of change”.

Looking ahead, LIFE NextFUMIGREEN will continue to align its roadmap with the European Green Pact and the Farm to Fork Strategy, demonstrating that safer, more efficient and environmentally friendly agriculture is possible. We thank our partners and collaborators for their commitment to achieving these objectives.
