The European project advances in the development of natural fumigants to combat pests in greenhouses with a lower environmental impact and greater safety for farmers.
Brussels, March 31, 2025 – The European LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project continues to advance with the application of fumigants in the EOR trial. These trials were conducted on a pepper crop in Sicily, Italy, on Thursday, March 27, 2025. This study is part of the research effort to develop a natural fumigant biopesticide capable of controlling pests such as whitefly and botrytis fungus, with a lower environmental impact and greater safety for farmers.
The trial will evaluate different doses according to the guidelines of partners B&B Asesores, Comercial Química Massó, Centro Tecnológico Tecnova, and FumiHogar to meet EU regulatory requirements for plant protection products, with the goal of finding the most effective and sustainable formula. This type of fumigation allows for a homogeneous distribution of the biopesticide, optimizing its protective action on greenhouse crops.
A key project for the agriculture of the future
LIFE NextFUMIGREEN promotes innovative solutions that reduce dependence on conventional pesticides and promote biodiversity and food security. Its objectives include:
- Less toxicity in phytosanitary treatments.
- Greater efficiency in pest and disease control.
- Reducing the environmental impact of horticultural production.
The project, with a total budget of €2,758,921.01, is 60% funded by the European Union’s LIFE program and is expected to last four and a half years. The initiative is led by FumiHogar, with the collaboration of B&B Asesores, Comercial Química Massó, BrioAgro Tech, and the Finnova Foundation.
