LIFE NextFUMIGREEN reduces 2,100 kg of toxics in horticultural crops

Innovative tests at the Tecnova Technology Center in Almeria evaluate the efficacy of new natural fumigants

The LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project, funded by the European Union’s LIFE program, is leading a revolution in agricultural pest control through the development of less toxic natural fumigants. Designed to combat challenges such as whitefly and botrytis, this innovative biopesticide aims to reduce the environmental impact and improve the sustainability of greenhouse horticultural crops.

With a total budget of 2,758,921.01 euros, 60% co-financed by the European Union, LIFE NextFUMIGREEN is led by Fumi-Hogar in collaboration with partners B&B Asesores, Comercial Química Massó, BrioAgro Tech, Fundación Finnova and Fundación Tecnova.

Key tests and objectives

Tests are being carried out at the Tecnova Technology Center (Almeria, Spain), where the efficacy of the fumigants is being evaluated under real conditions. The project also includes the validation of this technology in other strategic agricultural regions, such as Syracuse (Italy) and Lisbon (Portugal).

The main objectives of LIFE NextFUMIGREEN include:

  • Reduce 2,100 kg of toxic substances used in crops.
  • Reduce water and soil contamination by 11.64 km² and 116.4 km², respectively.
  • Contribute directly to the European Green Pact and the Farm to Fork strategy, promoting more sustainable agricultural practices.

In addition to reducing the use of conventional pesticides, the project is aligned with European regulations on the sustainable use of plant protection products, such as Directive 2009/128/EC and Regulation 1107/2009. The developed biopesticide is expected to be authorized for commercialization in the European market in 2028, with a high potential for replication in other regions of the Mediterranean, South America and Turkey.

During the duration of the project, which runs from January 1, 2023 to June 30, 2027, a significant reduction in CO2 emissions is estimated, with a positive impact on biodiversity and food security.
